Corey Johnson who is the Speaker of the New York City Council makes about $150,000 a year in salary and has a net worth of almost a million bucks. Not too shabby for a guy who isn't doing a good job.
The figures are little shaky because the council makes it just impossible to get the real numbers.
Putting aside crime and the dangers of walking on the streets, the number one problem for residents in New York City is renting an apartment at an affordable rent that is slightly better than the black hole of Calcutta. No heat, no hot water, drafty windows.
How does Corey handle the problem? He and his Council buddies allow Airbnb and similar illegal bed and breakfast cons to operate in the city, taking away thousands and thousands of apartments off the market.
Also permitted is for landlords to rent out shabby lofts in commercial buildings where the tenant would be lucky to have a toilet.
Instead of closing down these illegal rentals, the city is going to regulate them. Translated that means anything goes.
You can hear the landlords dancing in the streets with glee.
