NEW YORK TIMES “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3,” Tony Scott’s canny, energetic updating of the 1974 mass transit thriller, takes account of how much the character — to say nothing of the characters — of New York has changed since that almost mythic decade of decline and default. Like the original film, adapted from John Godey’s novel, this version, with a script by Brian Helgeland, deals with the brazen, borderline-insane hijacking of a local train on the Lexington Avenue line, but the subway system itself serves as an index of how the city and action-movie technology have evolved over the years."
****the jimmy olsen reporter who wrote this article is a guy named a.o. scott whose own career is probably on the way to the crapper as the new york times collapses, anyway.
but let us clue a.o. about something. this movie is just another turn off to the millions of people who do not come to nyc for one reason. it is because hollywood and tv and litter liners like the new york times portray to the world, we are a violent dangerous city. a.o. knows this and his newspaper knows this. wouldn't it have been nice if a.o. could have mentioned in his article that there is no way in hell someone can hijack a subway train and for that matter crime in the subway is at an all time low? why goodness gracious, a.o, the federal bureau of investigation says we are the safest large city in america.
this movie will hurt our tourism business. it would be better if someone did a movie about how the new york times reporters have a record of making up the news. come to think of, based on the past record of the new york times reporters, we might suggest that a.o. probably didn't even go to the movie.
anyway, how can we trust a guy who doesn't even have a real first name?
